Kweichow Moutai Co., Ltd Chairman Ding Xiongjun Spends Millions Seeking Scientific Innovation.

On October 12, during the World Forum on the Value of Premium Liquors, Ding Xiongjun, Chairman of Moutai Group, highlighted that premium liquors also share commonalities when it comes to value creation. These include a rich historical legacy, which embodies historical value, a profound cultural heritage representing cultural value, and unique craftsmanship, reflecting the value of technology and science. In the realm of Chinese baijiu, there exists a significant amount of technological content.

In fact, this is not the first time Ding Xiongjun has brought attention to the technological aspect of baijiu or Moutai. On March 21 of this year, Moutai Group convened the 2023 Annual Science and Technology Innovation Workshop, where they reviewed their achievements in scientific innovation, planned for future innovation, and set out on a renewed journey of technological innovation. Ding Xiongjun delivered a speech at the event, emphasizing the role of scientific heritage and technological innovation in the “Beautiful” era of Moutai. He stressed the need for Moutai’s technological innovation path to focus on the inheritance of science and the innovation of technology, making heritage increasingly traditional and innovation more modern. He emphasized the acceleration of technological innovation in three key areas: platforms, projects, and talent, to create a thriving future for Moutai’s technological innovation.

Regarding what constitutes innovation, Ding Xiongjun pointed out that in terms of basic theoretical innovation, they must adhere to the principle of “Scientific Inheritance is Beautiful.” This entails using scientific methods to further discover and understand the beauty of Moutai liquor, with a primary focus on basic theoretical innovation in four major fields: material science, biological science, environmental science, and life science. As for technological application innovation, it should be guided by the principle of “Technological Innovation is Beautiful.” This involves using modern scientific and technological advancements to enhance the modernization of Moutai, with a particular emphasis on innovation in five key areas: technological methods, equipment and facilities, green technology, digital applications, and product research and development.

According to the “2023 Annual Science and Technology Innovation Work Report,” in 2022, Moutai Group invested 640 million yuan in research and development, a year-on-year increase of 161%. In terms of research breakthroughs, Moutai initiated more than 200 scientific innovation projects across seven major areas and 23 research directions. They made significant breakthroughs in brewing environments, brewing materials, brewing microorganisms, brewing processes and equipment, flavor, and safety.

Apart from their efforts in the baijiu sector, Moutai has established four funds this year with a focus on technological innovation. According to Tianyancha, on September 18, Moutai Sci-Tech (Beijing) Investment Fund Partnership Enterprise (Limited Partnership) was established, with the executing managing partner being Moutai (Guizhou) Private Equity Fund Management Co., Ltd. The initial capital injection amounted to 200 million yuan.

Throughout this year, Moutai has participated in the establishment of four funds, whether as a limited partner (LP) or co-general partner (CO-GP). Their investment scope extends beyond consumer goods and into technology sectors such as new materials, new energy, information technology, and biotechnology.

As of now, Moutai has invested in over a dozen companies in the primary market, with at least five of them having gone public. Industry experts suggest that leading liquor companies like Moutai have become vital pillars of the local economy, as their investments in technology serve both to support local technological innovation and explore greater potential for industrial synergy.

Sample A and sample B
Sample A and sample B

A bottle of V.I.P Jiu 8 together with a bottle of Kweichow Moutai Flying Fairy was sent to a UK laboratory for analysis.

The laboratory is a registered member of UKAS – The United Kingdom Accreditation Service that is recognised by the UK government when comparing products to internationally agreed standards.

The two bottles were labelled sample A and sample B.

  • Sample A – V.I.P Jiu 8.
  • Sample B – Kweichow Moutai Flying Fairy.

The laboratory concluded that the two bottles were very different, with sample A (VIP Jiu 8) being considerably more complex than sample B (Kweichow Moutai Flying Fairy).
